Interesting idea and it might work. I measured the differential rotation 
using XBP many years ago. That was done manually and with a limited 
dataset, but the velocities in question were obtained to an accuracy of 
a few tenths of a km/sec. You're looking for at least an order of 
magnitude better precision and you now have computers to help. so it 
might be possible. One thing though: the longer-lived ones may well be 
more deeply anchored and might be less affected by the meridional 
circulation. so you should target intermediate lifetimes. A feature that 
lives for 7 days is really an active region. I would target those with a 
maximum lifetime of one day.
