Full Disk: Three Years in Two Minutes

This movie shows XRT's view of the Sun over the last three years. The ~27 day rotation period whirls by in ~3.5 seconds, showing the increase in solar activity as we approach the maximum of a roughly 11 year cycle in 2013 (though the current cycle has been atypical of the canonical picture). The structure of the corona, seen here, is determined largely by the emergence of magnetic fields into the solar atmosphere as they well up from the Sun's interior, a result of the solar dynamo.
