July is a time for fireworks, and the Sun has certainly been celebrating, with no fewer than 40 flares of at least GOES M-class in just the first two weeks. The movie linked above shows the dramatic nature of one of these flares, on the southwest limb of the Sun, 2012/07/08-09. As the flare progressed, it developed a ghostly structure high above the "main" part of the flare, and eventually made high-temperature (~6 million kelvins) magnetic connections all the way to the northern hemisphere!
