Today's movie shows eruptions from active region 11810 on August 7th, 2013. Note the distinctive S-shape, which is the characteristic feature of so-called "sigmoids". Sigmoids are particularly likely to erupt, producing coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that may impact Earth. Check out the CACTus CME report for this event to see how it appeared in the LASCO coronagraph. We've covered many sigmoidal regions in past XPOWs; click here for links to more examples.
