We all have our favorite place to view a spectacular sunset but the most breathtaking views on the sun happen when active regions reach the west limb. Active region AR12422 approached the west limb of the sun on 3 October 2015. Hinode tracked the active region for most of this day and above are two movies showing the hottest parts of the active region. As the active region reaches the limb, we are able to see the hot, long, loops edge on. This view helps create a 3D view of the active region because we can see how these loops change with height.
It can take several days for the active region to rotate behind the disk making for a very long and spectacular sunset.
