XRT Picture of the Week

Welcome to the XRT flare catalog, which includes basic information for all flares during the Hinode mission. Movies are available by clicking the icons next to each entry. The catalog may queried in IDL using the SolarSoft routine xrt_flarecat.pro and the corresponding save file. The flare catalog is now also available as a csv file.

Column Headers:

ID: Event number corresponding to that of the Hinode Flare Catalog. Click ID number for summary plot.
Peak: Time of the peak GOES X-ray flux (UT). Start & end times are included in the drown down field.
X & Y: Coordinate positions with respect to Sun-center (arcsec).
Class: GOES X-ray class. Classification details.
XRT: Number of XRT observations (excluding flare detection, visible light, and calibration images).
Flare Resp.: Number of images recorded using XRT''s flare response, which is a special set observing programs that begin when XRT automatically detects a flare (typically C5 or greater in class).
PFB: Yes, No, or NA (not applicable) for if data was downloaded from XRT''s pre-flare buffer (PFB). The PFB records high-cadence images that are returned from the spacecraft only if the flare response is triggered and XRT was observing the flaring region beforehand. Thus, this is only relevant for flares with a nonzero Flare Resp. column, and a "No" does not necessarily mean there is no data at all before the flare.
SOT: Number of Hinode Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) observations.
EIS: Number of Hinode Extreme-ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) observations.
RHESSI: Number of Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) observations.
Obs. Note: The reason that XRT did not observe a given event (only shown for table including events XRT didn''t observe).
NOAA Region: Active region number, click for Solar Monitor summary. 0 indicates an unnumbered region and NA means that the event was not include in NOAA''s daily event reports.

Column sorting: Each column may be used to sort the catalog by clicking the column headers.
Search bar: May be used to filter in addition to column sorting. Search terms are separated with spaces. Here are some instructive examples:

2010 ⇒ flares from 2010 and those that include 2010 in their ID or active region numbers.
B4. ⇒ B4 flares.
2010 B4. ⇒ B4 flares in 2010.
Nobeyama ⇒ events with Nobeyama Radioheliograph data.
C_poly ⇒ flares with images from that filter.
1024x1024 ⇒ flares with 1024x1024 pixel images.
Note that since the search is global on all of the catalog information, certain searches may overlap. For instance, searching for X1 will retrieve all X1 flares, but also all events with 1024x1024 pixel observations. In this case, adding a decimal (X1.) will bring up only the X1 flares.

Hinode is a Japanese mission developed and launched by ISAS/JAXA, with NAOJ as domestic partner and NASA and STFC (UK) as international partners. It is operated by these agencies in cooperation with ESA and the NSC (Norway). This catalog was developed by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and is based on the Hinode Flare Catalog maintained by ISAS/JAXA and the Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research (ISEE) at Nagoya University.
