Plasma Flows Along Coronal Loops

Here we have three mini-events, observed between the 20th and 27th of January, that each show plasma flowing along magnetic field lines. The flows are initiated by so-called "jets", which likely occur as a result of magnetic reconnection between the overlying loop system and new flux welling up from beneath the surface. As new loops emerge, they may collide, or reconnect, with existing the field lines. This releases energy, alters the structure of the field, and allows plasma to stream out along the overlying loops. Material may be sent out into space, to some distant part of the Sun, or just along a nearby loop as we see with these examples. A schematic of this model can be found here.
