Tiny sigmoid in the quiet Sun
Sigmoids are S- or reverse S-shaped pairs of hot loops usually seen in the solar corona around active regions (see for example this XRT pictures). Normally they are quite large, 100 or more arcseconds long. This picture shows a tiny sigmoid, only 20 arcseconds long, located in the quiet Sun very far from active regions. Sigmoid structures in active regions usually lead to production of flares or eruptions. Therefore, it is not at all surprising that this little quiet-Sun sigmoid also produced a tiny flare just a few minutes after this image was taken.
