On 2011/11/15, XRT observed an M1.9 flare (GOES X-Ray Class) from NOAA active region 11346. Hinode/XRT observations for this event started from 12:33 UT and the frame shown above captures the flare at about 5% of the GOES peak intensity through the medium thickness aluminum filter. To illustrate how XRT detects flares, the attached movie includes an interlay of the "flare patrol" images before, during, and after XRT's flare response is triggered. At around 12:33 UT, a sufficiently large increase in brightness is detected in the flare patrol images and the telescope switches into "flare mode" to observe the event.
