Peeling an Active Region

About this time last year Hinode XRT was tracking a simple active region, AR12615, for several days. This movie compresses 5 days worth of data down to 8.5 seconds. This region evolved significantly over the course of the movie but it evolved in a stable way.

When the video is played at a slower cadence, hundreds of microflares light up the bright central region. The brightest loops are near these microflaring regions. As the loops expand they move either northward or southward fading as they are pushed aside. The loops that are pushed north are eventually stripped from the active region and fade away while the loops that are pushed south find more favorable conditions eventually forming a stable structure.

This XPOW is related to the Solar Fury XPOW.
