End of Year Fireworks

The Sun has been ending 2022 with a bang! As Solar Cycle 25 progresses, the Sun has been increasing in activity levels. After a 2022 summer of plentiful flares, the Sun has been a bit quiet over the last few months. But during a period of a few days towards the end of the year, the Sun once again came alive with a series of high-energy flares from multiple ARs!

The image on the left shows AR13163 developing an interesting shape as it crackles with activity. During this time period from the 14th through the 15th, XRT observed both AR13163 and AR13165, which produced some high level C-class flares and low level M-class flares. Click on the image on the left to watch the series of flares and activity that came out of those two regions.

On the right in an image of AR13165 a bit later as it made its way to the limb. On the 17th, XRT was focused on observing this region. Though there weren't as many flares during this time, an interesting diffuse structure can be observed around the region. Additionally, XRT began observing the region at a very high-cadence around 18UT on the 17th, which led to a very detailed look at the evolution of this stucture. Click on the right image to watch the structure develop and evolve.

2022 was a great year for observing the Sun and 2023 should be even better! Happy holidays to all from the XRT team!
