Active Start for an Active Month

As recently noted the sun was quite active during the final month of 2022. As can be seen in the above movie, the month started with excitment. XRT was observing AR13152 from the end of November into early December as it made its way to the limb. On the morning of December 1st, an M1.0 flare was observed by XRT from this region. A large release of energy was observed as the region transformed. As it turns out, this was a precursor for what would be the most active month (in terms of number of sunpspots) that we have seen so far in solar cycle 25.

December 2022 holds that title for now, but it won't be long before a month in 2023 takes over as we continue to move toward solar maximum!
