The XRT image on the top left was taken on the 1st day of 2024, when there were only 4 active regions reported on the disk. On the contrary, the top right image obtained just 16 days later shows 17 active regions. You might think that Sun's activity level was significantly increased during the first 2 weeks of 2024. Interestingly, actual activity levels of the above two days turned out to be opposite, as shown by the plots of GOES X-ray flux for the corresponding days. On the 1st January, there were two M-class flares reported from AR 13536, which is the region produced an X5.0 flare on the previous day. On the 17th January, however, all 17 active regions were quiet, without a flare larger than C2.6. You only need a single vigorous active region to surpass the total activities from 17 active regions that are not so active. Quality over Quantity is true for the solar active regions observed in January 2024. Keywords: AR Tracking, Flare Filters: Al_mesh |
