Active Region Tug of War

Active region 12491 is a magnetically simple active region that was dim (in X-rays) up until the emergence of AR12494 on February 3rd, 2016. Hinode tracked this region as it evolved from a faint and quiet region to the bright and lively region you see in the movie above.

AR12494 emerged just south of XRT's field of view. At first, the two active regions barely interacted until, on the morning of February 4th, when bright X-ray loops permanently formed between the two regions.

The above movie shows the evolution of the inter-active region loops connecting AR12491 and AR12494 after a C1.1 flare. This unique data set can yield insights on why magnetic loops form between widely separated active regions.
