Solar activity briefly increased with the emergence of a large active region, AR 12673. This region released
several X-flares in the last few days causing radio blackouts and geomagnetic storms. On 10 September, while the region was on the west limb, it released
a powerful X8.2 flare. Although solar activity is decreasing due to the 11-year solar cycle, the cycles largest flares usually occur during the decline phase.
