Face of the Sun

The Sun makes a spooky face to celebrate Halloween. A coronal jet firing off gives the face a little twinkle in its left eye!

Twinkling Eye on a Spooky Halloween Face

A large network of coronal holes gave the Sun the appearance of a big face across the solar disk. An active region in the middle of the network serves as a big bright nose. XRT was able to capture a well timed coronal jet from the left eye of the face! The above image is enhanced to draw out the contrast and make the face more visible, but for the last week in October the Sun really did get into the spirit and could be see with a face shaped mask.

Happy (late) Halloween from the Sun and everyone on the XRT team!
